Morning everyone, the new episode of our Business Leader podcast is live and ready for you to enjoy.
The new episode looks at the story behind Motorway, which sells second-hand cars online and is one of the UK’s unicorns - a tech company valued at $1bn or more. We speak to Tom Leathes, the co-founder and chief executive of Motorway.
I am delighted to say that this episode is hosted by Dougal Shaw. Dougal has joined Business Leader from the BBC, where he was the host of the CEO Secrets series and produced a range of video, audio and written features about business and entrepreneurs. It is great to have him as part of the Business Leader team and we are working on lots of exciting projects. I will be back hosting Business Leader next week.
Leathes co-founded Motorway in 2017 with his two best friends and long-time business collaborators, Alex Buttle and Harry Jones. Investors spotted the potential and by 2021 the company was another British unicorn.
The platform handled £2.2bn worth of transactions in 2023, helping customers sell their second-hand vehicles to a network of more than 5,000 verified car dealers.
The three co-founders have a shared history as a team of serial entrepreneurs. They've set up more than five companies. Failures and setbacks, it turns out, have taught them as much as the successes.
