Is the media too negative about business?
Some thoughts + stories that matter this week + Neighbours
I have been asked this question, or a variant of it, many times since I started Off to Lunch. I have been asked it by CEOs, venture capitalists, fund managers, founders, advisers, traders and more. Actually, it is often not presented as a question at all, but a statement. It goes something like this: It would really help the UK create more new businesses, more success stories and level-up the economy if the financial media stopped criticising and trying to take people down all the time. Just look at the US, they celebrate success properly there.

There is clearly much interest in this topic among readers, particularly after the comments by New York Times reporter David Gelles that business journalists have fawned over chief executives too much and helped to break capitalism by not holding the likes of General Electric’s Jack Welch to account. You can read those comments here…
So, some thoughts…
My short answer to the question is no, but there are caveats…
